Wednesday Wisdom by Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou, You Alone Are Enough, You Have Nothing To Prove To Anybody, Man looking out into distance, mountains, lake, fog, I know why the caged bird sings, poem, caged bird

You ARE enough! Don't ever let anyone in this world tell you different, no matter who they are and how much you love them. There is only one YOU in this world. Find YOU, Be YOU, Celebrate YOU! You are unique and special. Never, ever, ever forget that! Don't let yourself feel trapped, or tied down, or forced into being something or someone you are not. Choose freedom and live it. Don't just dream, but go out instead and take it. You are too special and too unique not to share yourself with the world. The world needs YOU for your special gifts and talents that only YOU can give. YOU are enough. You really have nothing to prove to anyone - ever. ♥

Maya Angelou is one of my favorites. I loved her spunk, her drive, her creativity, her passion, and her determination for standing up for her beliefs despite what anyone thought of her. I have never gotten enough of hearing her thoughts and words and interviews. For me, she will always live on. She is timeless.

Recently I had someone troubled come to me, and they kept repeating to me over and over again that they "knew why the caged bird sang." At the time, I didn't understand what they meant. Then... (I love how this works in life!) I came upon the above quote from Maya and found it fitting in so many ways, so I wanted to share it with all of you. Imagine my surprise when I was googling Maya Angelou's name so I could add in another fact or two and it said the following: "She is best known for her books, including her series of seven autobiographies, starting with the critically acclaimed I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969)."

Of course, it made me smile, as I then knew I was meant to read Maya's poem Caged Bird so I too could understand why the caged bird sings. There was a lesson I was to learn. For some reason, I was brought to this poem and expected to understand it. I have shared it with you below. I hope you too get a little bit of something out of this post and Maya Angelou's Caged Bird. I hope it makes a little bit of difference. Encourages you to be free... helps you be a little bit more YOU. ♥

Caged Bird

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind    and floats downstream    till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky. But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and    his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird sings    with a fearful trill    of things unknown    but longed for still    and his tune is heard    on the distant hill    for the caged bird    sings of freedom. The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn and he names the sky his own But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams    his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream    his wings are clipped and his feet are tied    so he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird sings    with a fearful trill    of things unknown    but longed for still    and his tune is heard    on the distant hill    for the caged bird    sings of freedom.
